Stony Rapids is a northern hamlet in Northern Saskatchewan, about 82 kilometres south of the border with the Northwest Territories. It sits along the Fond du Lac River, which links it with Fond-du-Lac, Uranium City and Camsell Portage.
The place carries names from the languages of the region. In Chipewyan it is Deschaghe, meaning "settlement on the other side of the Rapids," and in Woods Cree it is asinîwi-pâwistikohk, meaning "stones in these rapids."
Today Stony Rapids is the end of Saskatchewan Highway 905, an unpaved road of about 469 kilometres that begins at Highway 102. Part of it, between Points North Landing and Black Lake, is a seasonal winter road. A winter ice road connects Fond-du-Lac and Uranium City, and an all-season road runs 20 kilometres southeast to Black Lake. The airport and water aerodrome remain vital links.
The Athabasca Health Facility, completed in 2003 at a cost of $12.7 million, serves the Athabasca region. It stands on Chicken 224 reserve land of the Black Lake Dene Nation, next to the hamlet.
